Naturalization
Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is conferred upon a foreign citizen or national after he or she fulfills the requirements established by Congress. The requirements are:
- Lawful permanent residence for 5 years (or 3 years if the applicant is married to a U.S. Citizen for 3 years and the U.S. Citizens spouse has been a U.S. Citizen for 3 years);
- At least 18 years old;
- Physically present in the U.S. for at least 1/2 of the past 5 years (or half of 3 years if married to a U.S. Citizen [see above])
- Ability to read, write, and speak English;
- Knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government;
- Good moral character; and
- Attachment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution;
